How Metal Injection Molding Works?
Let’s Discuss Your Metal Injection Molding (MIM) Needs With Us
What is Metal Injection Molding?
Metal Injection Molding (MIM) is an advanced manufacturing process that combines the versatility of plastic injection molding with the strength of metal. It starts with refined metal powders mixed with a binder to form a moldable feedstock, which is injected into complex molds using specialized machines, creating a “green part.” After debinding and sintering, the component achieves high density and superior mechanical strength.
MIM is ideal for producing intricate geometries and precision parts, offering a cost-effective alternative to CNC machining and casting, particularly for high-volume production, ensuring efficiency and exceptional quality.

Metal Injection Molding (MIM) manufacturing Process
Molding
Injection Molding utilizes the same process and equipment as Plastic Injection Molding. In this method, pelletized feedstock is heated and injected under high pressure into a mold cavity, forming a “green part.” Once cooled, the part is ejected, and the cycle repeats.
The binders help transport metal powders at around 200°C, ensuring uniform distribution. Multi-cavity molds improve production efficiency, allowing for higher output. To account for shrinkage during sintering, mold cavities are designed approximately 20% larger, with precise shrinkage rates calculated based on the specific material composition used.
Debinding
After Injection Molding, the component moves to the De-binding phase, where binder materials are removed from the Metal Injection Molding (MIM) part. This process occurs in stages, extracting most of the binder while keeping enough to maintain structural integrity for handling.
Solvent extraction is a commonly used method for efficient binder removal. Once de-binding is complete, the part becomes semi-porous, allowing any remaining binder to evaporate during sintering. This ensures a clean, precise, and high-quality final product with excellent mechanical properties.
Sintering
The parts are placed on ceramic setters and loaded into a sintering furnace designed for high temperatures and controlled atmospheres. Inside, the brown parts are gradually heated in a protective environment, allowing any remaining binders to vaporize completely.
Once the binders are removed, the temperature is increased to fuse the metal particles, eliminating voids and ensuring uniform shrinkage. This process finalizes the part’s size and structure, forming a dense, solid component. The sintered parts achieve a density exceeding 97% of their theoretical value, providing mechanical properties comparable to wrought materials.
