How Metal Injection Molding Works?

Let’s Discuss Your Metal Injection Molding (MIM) Needs With Us

What is Metal Injection Molding?

Metal Injection Molding (MIM) is an advanced manufacturing process that combines the flexibility of plastic injection molding with the strength and durability of metal. It starts with refined metal powders, mixed with a binder to form a moldable feedstock, which is then injected into intricate molds using specialized machines to create a “green part.”

After debinding and sintering, the component transforms into a high-density metal structure with exceptional strength. MIM is ideal for producing complex geometries and high-precision parts, offering a cost-effective alternative to CNC machining and casting, especially for large-scale production.

Metal Injection Molding (MIM) manufacturing Process

Molding

Injection Molding follows the same process and equipment as Plastic Injection Molding. In this method, pelletized feedstock is heated and injected under high pressure into a mold cavity, forming a “green part.” Once cooled, the part is ejected, and the cycle repeats efficiently.

The binders help transport metal powders at approximately 200°C, ensuring uniform distribution. Multi-cavity molds improve production efficiency, allowing for high-volume output. To compensate for shrinkage during sintering, mold cavities are designed about 20% larger, with precise shrinkage rates calculated based on the specific material composition used.

debinding

Debinding

After Injection Molding, the component enters the De-binding phase, where binder materials are removed from the Metal Injection Molding (MIM) part. This process occurs in stages, extracting most of the binder while retaining structural integrity for handling.

Solvent extraction is a commonly used method for efficient binder removal. After de-binding, the part becomes semi-porous, allowing any remaining binder to escape during sintering. This ensures a clean, precise, and high-quality final product with superior mechanical properties.

Sintering

The parts are placed on ceramic setters and loaded into a sintering furnace, which operates at high temperatures in a controlled atmosphere. Inside, the brown parts are gradually heated in a protective environment, allowing any remaining binders to vaporize completely.

Once the binders are removed, the temperature is elevated, causing the metal particles to fuse and eliminating any voids. This process ensures uniform shrinkage, bringing the part to its final size and forming a dense, solid structure. The sintered parts achieve a density exceeding 97% of the theoretical value, giving them mechanical properties comparable to wrought materials.
