Metal Injection Molding (MIM) manufacturing Process

Molding

Metal Injection Molding (MIM) follows a process similar to plastic injection molding, utilizing comparable equipment. In this technique, a pelletized feedstock—made from fine metal powders mixed with a binder—is heated to approximately 200°C and injected under high pressure into a mold cavity, forming a “green part.” Once cooled, the part is ejected, allowing the cycle to repeat efficiently.

The binder ensures even distribution of metal powders during injection, while multi-cavity molds enhance production efficiency for high-volume manufacturing. To accommodate shrinkage during the sintering stage, mold cavities are designed about 20% larger, with precise shrinkage rates calculated based on the specific material composition.

debinding

Debinding

After injection molding, the component undergoes the debinding phase, where binder materials are carefully removed while preserving structural integrity. Solvent extraction is a widely used method for efficient binder removal. Once debinding is complete, the part becomes semi-porous, allowing any residual binder to escape during sintering. This process ensures a clean, precise, and high-quality final product with exceptional mechanical properties.

Sintering

After debinding, components are positioned on ceramic setters and placed into a sintering furnace, where they are heated to high temperatures in a controlled atmosphere. During this process, any remaining binder completely vaporizes. As the temperature increases, metal particles fuse together, eliminating voids and ensuring uniform shrinkage. This results in a dense, solid structure with a density exceeding 97% of its theoretical value, providing mechanical properties comparable to those of wrought materials.
