Metal Injection Molding (MIM) manufacturing Process
Molding
Metal Injection Molding (MIM) follows a process akin to plastic injection molding, utilizing similar equipment for efficient production. This technique begins with a pelletized feedstock—a blend of fine metal powders and a binder—which is heated to around 200°C and injected under high pressure into a mold cavity, forming a “green part.” Once cooled, the part is ejected, allowing for a continuous production cycle.
The binder system ensures uniform distribution of metal powders during injection, while multi-cavity molds optimize efficiency for high-volume manufacturing. To compensate for shrinkage during sintering, mold cavities are designed approximately 20% larger, with precise shrinkage rates calculated based on the material’s composition, ensuring dimensional accuracy in the final product.
Debinding
After injection molding, the component enters the debinding phase, where binder materials are carefully removed while maintaining structural integrity. One of the most effective methods for this process is solvent extraction, which efficiently eliminates the binder without compromising the part’s shape.
Once debinding is complete, the component becomes semi-porous, enabling any residual binder to escape during the sintering process. This meticulous approach ensures a clean, precise, and high-quality final product with exceptional mechanical properties, making it suitable for demanding applications across various industries.
Sintering
After debinding, components are carefully placed on ceramic setters and transferred to a sintering furnace, where they are heated to high temperatures under a controlled atmosphere. During this stage, any remaining binder fully vaporizes, leaving behind a pure metal structure.
As the temperature rises, the metal particles fuse together, eliminating voids and ensuring uniform shrinkage. This process results in a high-density, solid structure, achieving a density exceeding 97% of its theoretical value. The final product boasts mechanical properties comparable to wrought materials, making it highly durable and suitable for precision applications.
