Metal Injection Molding (MIM) manufacturing Process
Molding
Metal Injection Molding (MIM) operates similarly to plastic injection molding, using comparable equipment and processes. In this method, a pelletized feedstock—comprising fine metal powders blended with a binder—is heated to around 200°C and injected under high pressure into a mold cavity, forming a “green part.” Once cooled, the part is ejected, allowing for a continuous and efficient production cycle.
The binder ensures uniform distribution of metal powders during injection, while multi-cavity molds enhance efficiency for high-volume manufacturing. To compensate for shrinkage during sintering, mold cavities are designed approximately 20% larger, with precise shrinkage rates calculated based on the specific material composition, ensuring dimensional accuracy in the final component.
Debinding
After injection molding, the component enters the debinding phase, where binder materials are carefully removed while maintaining structural integrity. Solvent extraction is commonly used for efficient binder removal, ensuring minimal distortion. Once debinding is complete, the part becomes semi-porous, allowing any remaining binder to escape during the sintering process. This controlled approach results in a clean, precise, and high-quality final product with superior mechanical properties and dimensional accuracy.
Sintering
After debinding, components are carefully arranged on ceramic setters and placed into a sintering furnace, where they undergo controlled high-temperature processing. During this stage, any residual binder is completely vaporized, leaving behind a pure metal structure. As the temperature rises, metal particles fuse together, eliminating voids and ensuring uniform shrinkage. This process produces a dense, solid structure with a density exceeding 97% of its theoretical value, delivering mechanical properties comparable to wrought materials for superior strength and durability.
