Metal Injection Molding (MIM) manufacturing Process
Molding
Metal Injection Molding (MIM) follows a process similar to plastic injection molding, utilizing comparable equipment and techniques. A pelletized feedstock, composed of fine metal powders and a binder, is heated to approximately 200°C and injected under high pressure into a mold cavity, forming a “green part.” Once cooled, the part is ejected, enabling a continuous and efficient production cycle.
The binder ensures uniform metal powder distribution during injection, while multi-cavity molds enhance efficiency for high-volume manufacturing. To account for shrinkage during sintering, mold cavities are designed approximately 20% larger, with precise shrinkage rates calculated based on the specific material composition, ensuring exceptional dimensional accuracy in the final component.
Debinding
After injection molding, the component enters the debinding phase, where binder materials are systematically removed while maintaining structural integrity. Solvent extraction is commonly used for efficient binder removal, minimizing distortion and ensuring the part retains a stable form.
Once debinding is complete, the part becomes semi-porous, allowing any residual binder to escape during the sintering process. This controlled approach ensures a clean, precise, and high-quality final product with superior mechanical properties and exceptional dimensional accuracy.
Sintering
After debinding, components are carefully arranged on ceramic setters and placed in a sintering furnace, where they undergo precise high-temperature processing. During this stage, any residual binder is fully vaporized, leaving behind a pure metal structure.
As the temperature rises, metal particles fuse together, eliminating voids and ensuring uniform shrinkage. This process produces a dense, solid structure with a density exceeding 97% of its theoretical value, delivering mechanical properties comparable to wrought materials for exceptional strength and durability.
