Metal Injection Molding (MIM) manufacturing Process
Molding
Metal Injection Molding (MIM) follows a process similar to plastic injection molding, using comparable equipment and techniques. It begins with a pelletized feedstock—fine metal powders mixed with a binder—heated to around 200°C and injected under high pressure into a mold to form a “green part.
Once cooled, the part is ejected, allowing for efficient, continuous production. The binder ensures even powder distribution, while multi-cavity molds boost productivity for high-volume manufacturing.
To account for shrinkage during sintering, mold cavities are typically designed about 20% larger. Shrinkage is precisely calculated based on material composition, ensuring exceptional dimensional accuracy in the final component.
Debinding
Following injection molding, the component undergoes the debinding phase, where binder materials are carefully removed without compromising structural integrity. Solvent extraction is commonly used to ensure effective binder removal, reducing distortion and preserving the part’s shape.
After debinding, the component becomes semi-porous, allowing any residual binder to escape during sintering. This controlled, two-step process ensures a clean transition and results in a high-quality final product with superior mechanical properties and exceptional dimensional accuracy.
Sintering
After debinding, components are carefully placed on ceramic setters and loaded into a sintering furnace for high-temperature processing. During this stage, any remaining binder is fully vaporised, leaving behind a clean metal structure.
As temperatures rise, metal particles fuse through solid-state diffusion, eliminating internal voids and achieving uniform shrinkage. The result is a dense, solid component—often exceeding 97% of its theoretical density—with mechanical properties comparable to wrought metals, ensuring exceptional strength, durability, and performance.
