Metal Injection Molding (MIM) manufacturing Process

Molding

The Metal Injection Molding (MIM) process closely mirrors plastic injection molding, utilising similar equipment and methodologies. It starts with a pelletised feedstock composed of fine metal powders blended with a thermoplastic binder. This mixture is heated to around 200°C and injected under high pressure into a mould, forming what is referred to as a “green part.”

After cooling, the green part is ejected from the mould, allowing for efficient and continuous production. The binder ensures uniform dispersion of metal particles, while multi-cavity moulds enhance productivity—making the process ideal for high-volume manufacturing.

To account for shrinkage during sintering, moulds are typically designed approximately 20% larger than the final component. This shrinkage is carefully calculated based on the material formulation, ensuring exceptional dimensional accuracy in the finished part.

debinding

Debinding

Following the injection molding stage, the component enters the debinding phase—a critical process in which the binder material is carefully removed without affecting the part’s structural integrity. Solvent extraction is commonly employed to dissolve a substantial portion of the binder, reducing the risk of distortion and preserving the component’s shape.

After debinding, the part becomes semi-porous, allowing any remaining binder to escape during the sintering process. This controlled, two-step method ensures a smooth transition to final densification, resulting in components with high mechanical strength and tight dimensional tolerances.

Sintering

After debinding, components are precisely arranged on ceramic setters and placed into a high-temperature sintering furnace. In this crucial stage, any remaining binder is completely vaporised, leaving a clean metal matrix ready for densification.

As temperatures rise, metal particles fuse through solid-state diffusion, eliminating internal voids and enabling uniform, controlled shrinkage. The result is a dense, structurally sound component—often achieving over 97% of theoretical density. These final parts exhibit mechanical properties comparable to wrought metals, offering exceptional strength, durability, and reliability, even in the most demanding industrial environments.
