Metal Injection Molding (MIM) manufacturing Process
Molding
The Metal Injection Molding (MIM) process is highly similar to plastic injection molding, utilising comparable equipment and techniques. It begins with a pelletised feedstock made from fine metal powders mixed with a thermoplastic binder. This mixture is heated to around 200°C and injected under high pressure into a mould, forming what is known as a “green part.”
Once cooled, the green part is ejected from the mould, enabling efficient and continuous production. The binder ensures uniform distribution of metal particles, while the use of multi-cavity moulds boosts productivity—making MIM ideal for high-volume manufacturing.
To compensate for shrinkage during sintering, moulds are typically designed about 20% larger than the desired final component. This shrinkage is precisely calculated based on the material formulation, ensuring exceptional dimensional accuracy in the finished part.
Debinding
After the injection molding stage, the component undergoes the debinding phase—a crucial process where the binder material is carefully removed without compromising the part’s structural integrity. Solvent extraction is typically used to dissolve a significant portion of the binder, minimising the risk of distortion and maintaining the component’s shape.
Following debinding, the part becomes semi-porous, allowing any remaining binder to escape during the sintering process. This controlled, two-step approach ensures a seamless transition to final densification, producing components with excellent mechanical strength and precise dimensional tolerances.
Sintering
After debinding, the components are carefully arranged on ceramic setters and placed in a high-temperature sintering furnace. During this critical phase, any remaining binder is fully vaporised, leaving behind a clean metal matrix primed for densification.
As the temperature increases, metal particles fuse through solid-state diffusion, eliminating internal voids and allowing for uniform, controlled shrinkage. The outcome is a dense, structurally robust component—often achieving over 97% of its theoretical density. These final parts exhibit mechanical properties comparable to wrought metals, delivering exceptional strength, durability, and reliability, even in the most demanding industrial applications.
