Metal Injection Molding (MIM) is more than a process; it’s a skillful blend of metalworking precision and boundless design potential. Metal Injection Molding (MIM) Services India

Molding

Injection Molding utilizes the same equipment and process as Plastic Injection Molding. In this method, pelletized feedstock is heated and injected under high pressure into a mold cavity, forming a “green part.” Once cooled, the part is ejected, and the cycle repeats. The binders melt to transport the metal powders, with the process occurring at around 200°C. Molds can have multiple cavities for increased production efficiency. To accommodate shrinkage during sintering, the mold cavity is designed about 20% larger, with the shrinkage rate accurately calculated for each material used.

Debinding

After Injection Molding, the part moves to the De-binding phase, where binder materials are removed from the molded Metal Injection Molding (MIM) component. This process typically occurs in stages, removing most of the binder before sintering, while leaving enough to maintain the part’s structure for handling. Solvent extraction is one of the most common methods used to eliminate the binder. After de-binding, the part becomes semi-porous, allowing any remaining binder to escape during the sintering process, ensuring a clean and precise final product.

Sintering

The parts are placed on ceramic setters and loaded into a sintering furnace, designed for high temperatures and controlled atmospheres. Inside, the brown parts are slowly heated in a protective environment to remove any remaining binders. Once the binders vaporize, the temperature is raised to fuse the metal particles, eliminating gaps between them. This process causes uniform shrinkage, bringing the part to its intended size and forming a dense, solid structure. The final density of the sintered parts typically exceeds 97% of the theoretical density, giving the finished product properties comparable to those of wrought materials.
