Metal Injection Molding (MIM) manufacturing Process

Molding

The Metal Injection Molding (MIM) process closely resembles plastic injection molding, using similar equipment and techniques. It begins with a pelletised feedstock composed of fine metal powders blended with a thermoplastic binder. This mixture is heated to approximately 200°C and injected under high pressure into a mould, forming what is known as a “green part.”

After cooling, the green part is ejected from the mould, allowing for efficient and continuous production. The binder ensures uniform distribution of metal particles, while the use of multi-cavity moulds enhances productivity—making MIM an excellent choice for high-volume manufacturing.

To account for shrinkage during sintering, moulds are typically designed around 20% larger than the final desired component. This shrinkage is meticulously calculated based on the material formulation, ensuring outstanding dimensional accuracy in the finished part.

debinding

Debinding

After the injection molding stage, the component enters the debinding phase—a critical step where the binder material is carefully removed while preserving the part’s structural integrity. Solvent extraction is commonly used to dissolve a significant portion of the binder, reducing the risk of distortion and maintaining the component’s shape.

Once debinding is complete, the part becomes semi-porous, allowing any residual binder to escape during the sintering process. This controlled, two-step approach ensures a smooth transition to final densification, resulting in components with exceptional mechanical strength and precise dimensional tolerances.

Sintering

After debinding, the components are meticulously arranged on ceramic setters and placed in a high-temperature sintering furnace. During this crucial phase, any remaining binder is completely vaporised, leaving behind a clean metal matrix ready for densification.

As the temperature rises, the metal particles fuse through solid-state diffusion, eliminating internal voids and ensuring uniform, controlled shrinkage. The result is a dense, structurally strong component—often achieving over 97% of its theoretical density. These final parts exhibit mechanical properties comparable to wrought metals, offering exceptional strength, durability, and reliability, even in the most demanding industrial environments.
