Metal Injection Molding (MIM) manufacturing Process
Molding
The Metal Injection Molding (MIM) process closely resembles plastic injection molding, using similar equipment and techniques. It begins with a pelletised feedstock consisting of fine metal powders blended with a thermoplastic binder. This mixture is heated to approximately 200°C and injected under high pressure into a mould, forming what is known as a “green part.”
Once cooled, the green part is ejected from the mould, enabling efficient and continuous production. The binder ensures uniform distribution of metal particles, while the use of multi-cavity moulds enhances productivity—making MIM an ideal solution for high-volume manufacturing.
To compensate for shrinkage during sintering, moulds are typically designed about 20% larger than the final component. This shrinkage is meticulously calculated based on the material formulation, ensuring outstanding dimensional accuracy in the finished product.
Debinding
After the injection molding stage, the component enters the debinding phase—a critical step where the binder material is carefully removed while preserving the part’s structural integrity. Solvent extraction is commonly used to dissolve a significant portion of the binder, reducing the risk of distortion and maintaining the component’s shape.
Following debinding, the part becomes semi-porous, allowing any residual binder to escape during the sintering process. This controlled, two-step approach ensures a smooth transition to final densification, resulting in components with exceptional mechanical strength and precise dimensional tolerances.
Sintering
After the injection molding stage, the component undergoes the debinding phase—an essential process where the binder material is carefully removed while maintaining the part’s structural integrity. Solvent extraction is typically used to dissolve a significant portion of the binder, minimising the risk of distortion and preserving the component’s shape.
Once debinding is complete, the part becomes semi-porous, allowing any remaining binder to escape during the sintering process. This controlled, two-step method ensures a seamless transition to final densification, resulting in components with superior mechanical strength and precise dimensional tolerances.
