Metal Injection Molding (MIM) manufacturing Process
Molding
The Metal Injection Molding (MIM) process is very similar to plastic injection molding, utilising comparable equipment and techniques. It starts with a pelletised feedstock made from fine metal powders mixed with a thermoplastic binder. This mixture is heated to around 200°C and injected under high pressure into a mould, creating what is referred to as a “green part.
After cooling, the green part is ejected from the mould, allowing for efficient and continuous production. The binder helps maintain an even distribution of metal particles, while the use of multi-cavity moulds boosts productivity—making MIM highly suited for high-volume manufacturing.
To account for shrinkage during the sintering phase, moulds are designed approximately 20% larger than the final component. This shrinkage is carefully calculated based on the material composition, ensuring exceptional dimensional accuracy in the finished product.
Debinding
After the injection molding stage, the component moves into the debinding phase—a crucial step where the binder material is carefully removed without compromising the part’s structural integrity. Solvent extraction is typically used to dissolve a large portion of the binder, minimising the risk of distortion and preserving the component’s shape.
Once debinding is complete, the part becomes semi-porous, enabling any remaining binder to escape during the sintering process. This controlled two-step method ensures a smooth transition to final densification, producing components with outstanding mechanical strength and precise dimensional accuracy.
Sintering
Following the injection molding stage, the component enters the debinding phase an essential step where the binder material is carefully removed without compromising the part’s structural integrity. Solvent extraction is commonly employed to dissolve a major portion of the binder, reducing the risk of distortion and preserving the component’s form.
After debinding, the part becomes semi-porous, allowing any residual binder to escape during sintering. This controlled, two step process ensures a smooth transition to final densification, delivering components with exceptional mechanical strength and precise dimensional accuracy.
