Metal Injection Molding (MIM) manufacturing Process
Molding
The Metal Injection Molding (MIM) process closely mirrors plastic injection molding, utilising similar equipment and techniques. It starts with a pelletised feedstock—composed of fine metal powders blended with a thermoplastic binder—heated to approximately 200°C and injected under high pressure into a mould to create a “green part.”
After cooling, the green part is ejected from the mould, enabling efficient and continuous production. The binder ensures uniform powder distribution, while multi-cavity moulds enhance throughput for high-volume manufacturing.
To accommodate shrinkage during sintering, mould cavities are typically designed around 20% larger than the intended final dimensions. This shrinkage is accurately predicted based on the material composition, ensuring exceptional dimensional precision in the finished component.
Debinding
Following injection molding, the component enters the debinding phase, where binder materials are carefully removed without compromising the structural integrity of the part. Solvent extraction is commonly employed to effectively eliminate a portion of the binder, minimising distortion and maintaining the component’s shape.
After debinding, the part becomes semi-porous, allowing any residual binder to escape during the sintering process. This controlled, two-step approach ensures a smooth transition, resulting in a high-quality final product with superior mechanical strength and exceptional dimensional accuracy.
Sintering
After debinding, components are carefully placed on ceramic setters and loaded into a high-temperature sintering furnace. During this critical stage, any remaining binder is fully vaporised, leaving a clean metal matrix ready for densification.
As temperatures increase, metal particles fuse via solid-state diffusion, eliminating internal voids and ensuring uniform shrinkage. The result is a dense, high-integrity component, often achieving over 97% of its theoretical density. These final parts exhibit mechanical properties comparable to wrought metals, delivering outstanding strength, durability, and performance in demanding applications.
