Metal Injection Molding (MIM) manufacturing Process
Molding
The Metal Injection Molding (MIM) process closely mirrors plastic injection molding, using similar equipment and techniques. It begins with a pelletised feedstock composed of fine metal powders combined with a thermoplastic binder. This mixture is heated to around 200°C and injected at high pressure into a mould, forming what is known as a “green part.”
Once cooled, the green part is ejected from the mould, enabling efficient and continuous production. The binder ensures even distribution of metal particles, while multi-cavity moulds enhance productivity, making MIM particularly well-suited for high-volume manufacturing.
Since parts shrink during sintering, moulds are typically designed about 20% larger than the intended final size. This shrinkage is carefully accounted for based on the material formulation, ensuring outstanding dimensional accuracy in the finished components.
Debinding
Following the injection molding stage, the component enters the debinding phase—a crucial process where the binder material is carefully removed while preserving the part’s structural integrity. Solvent extraction is commonly employed to dissolve a significant portion of the binder, reducing the risk of distortion and maintaining the component’s shape.
After debinding, the part becomes semi-porous, allowing any remaining binder to escape during sintering. This controlled, two-step approach ensures a seamless transition to final densification, resulting in components with exceptional mechanical strength and precise dimensional accuracy.
Sintering
After the injection molding stage, the component moves into the debinding phase—an essential process where the binder material is carefully removed while maintaining the part’s structural integrity. Solvent extraction is typically used to dissolve a large portion of the binder, minimising the risk of distortion and preserving the component’s shape.
Once debinding is complete, the part becomes semi-porous, enabling any residual binder to escape during sintering. This carefully controlled two-step process ensures a smooth transition to final densification, resulting in components with exceptional mechanical strength and precise dimensional accuracy.
